| Born in Ponce,
Puerto Rico. My mother Irma died at the age of 28 of
gunshots when I was five
months old. I met my father when I was around 10 years old
and he died when I was approximately 12 years old. I am
the youngest among my bothers Hector and Edwin Rullan (Deceased),
a combat Vietnam veteran. I have additionall brothers, on
my father's side, some who I have never met. After my mother
was kill, I was raised by my maternal grandmother America
for a while and then entered a private catholic orphanage
(Institucion Ferran, Ponce, PR). The orphanage was ran and
supervised by Catholic Priests and attended the Colegio
Ponceno de Varones in Ponce, Puerto Rico. I also attended
the Ponce High School in Ponce.
I completed my high school
education in 1968 and began working at a local radio station
as a "apprentice DJ and broadcaster".
In 1969 volunteered for the
United States Army and took part of my military basic training
together with my brother Edwin at Fort Jackson, SC. When
he was sent to Vietnam in 1969, I was temporarily assigned
to Fort Riley, KS. Shortly after his tour in Vietnam he
was wounded in action and I then volunteered for services
in Vietnam. Ironically I was assigned to the same company
where he was.
After being medically evacuated
in 1971 to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC,
I was discharged from the Army and returned to Puerto Rico.
In 1976 I rejoined the Army until 1982.
I came to California in 1984.
I am now a disabled Vietnam Veteran and involved in many
organizations that deals with veterans; specially the American
Legion.
At the American Legions I have
learned from other veterans how to value our military history.
Furthermore, being part of a such organization dedicated
to the morale and support of veterans makes an impact on
my life; caring for those who served our country is my #1
goal.
